Skyrim’s Patch 1.2- More Bad Than Good?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim  launched on November 11th, and being a colossal open world game from Bethesda (and given the track record from Fallout: New Vegas), some problems were to be anticipated. Bethesda has been widely known for developing amazing, huge open world games, but with this magnitude comes glitches. And lots of ’em.


From day one players noticed texture pop-in when The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was installed onto their Xbox 360s. PS3 and PC players noticed rapidly decreasing frame rates. Hell, there were even mammoths falling from the sky and dead people showing up at weddings. So, to try to help us slay more dragons, Bethesda released a patch for Skyrim yesterday.


The following list of fixes in the patch were noted on the Bethesda Blog.


UPDATE 1.2 NOTES (all platforms unless specified)


  • Improved occasional performance issues resulting from long term play (PlayStation 3)
  • Fixed issue where textures would not properly upgrade when installed to drive (Xbox 360)
  • Fixed crash on startup when audio is set to sample rate other than 44100Hz (PC)
  • Fixed issue where projectiles did not properly fade away
  • Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead
  • Dragon corpses now clean up properly
  • Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
  • Fixed rare NPC sleeping animation bug
  • Fixed rare issue with dead corpses being cleared up prematurely
  • Skeleton Key will now work properly if player has no lockpicks in their inventory
  • Fixed rare issue with renaming enchanted weapons and armor
  • Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
  • ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)
  • Fixed occasional mouse sensitivity issues (PC)
  • General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls (PC)


Unfortunately, the patch does not address the PC frame rate problem noted earlier.  Also, even though Bethesda said patch 1.2 was going to fix the frame rate issues on PS3, many gamers are arguing and complaining on forums that the patch did not help. In fact, it screwed things up even more. Now, if you download the patch, dragons will fly backwards.



What’s up, Bethesda? We want to play your game. We payed hard earned cash to play Skyrim, and waited eagerly for a patch when these issues should have been fixed before the game hit store shelves. Do we have to wait for a Christmas patch now?



If you don’t want to face the problems associated with this patch, you can choose not to download the patch and play Skyrim, while your profile is offline from either Xbox Live, PSN or Steam. If you want to kill dragons, we recommend just doing that. Besides, party invitations are annoying, we want to do our skyrimming in peace.
