Konami has revealed in their Pre-E3 Show 2013 that 24’s Kiefer Sutherland will be providing the gravelly voice of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V.

Today during their “Pre-E3 Show 2013”, Konami finally revealed the voice of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V – none other than 24‘s Jack Bauer himself, Kiefer Sutherland.

Is David Hayter’s Metal Gear Solid V Absence A Prank?

“This time, with Metal Gear Solid V, the themes are a little different from previous games in the series,” said series creator Hideo Kojima. “We’re taking on some very heavy subjects such as race and revenge. I wanted Snake to have a more subdued performance, expressed through subtle facial movements and tone of voice rather than words.”

Kojima goes on to state that he wants the acting in Metal Gear Solid V to be conveyed mostly through subtleties in the vocal performance and facial expressions, rather than having to explain feelings through extra dialogue. He gives the example, “In previous Metal Gears, Snake’s emotions were expressed through phrases like ‘Kaz? Are you okay?’ But this time, all he says is, ‘Kaz?'” Perhaps he’s trying to cut down on the incredibly long cinematics Metal Gear Solid is known for; many fans voiced their frustrations when Metal Gear Solid 4 featured cutscenes reaching the 45 minute mark, with some dubbing it an “interactive movie”.

Sutherland stated, “It’s an honor to be able to play this character. This character has an unbelievable legacy. There’s a real personal quality to the character that I’ve connected to. I’m not a gamer, and I even knew about this game. I was certainly keenly aware of the legacy of these games, the unbelievable success of these games.” It should be noted that Sutherland never directly says the name Snake, rather simply “this character”. Is Kojima pulling our leg again? However, it makes a bit of sense when you realize that all of the performances for Metal Gear Solid V were recorded with motion capture, and as great as David Hayter was as the voice of Snake, he has zero true acting experience outside of that god-awful Guyver movie. Someone as experienced as Kiefer Sutherland will likely bring a whole new level of emotion to the role, and he’s been playing an action hero for years on both the big and small screens.

“Furthermore, the game takes place in 1984, when Snake is 49 years old,” said Kojima. “Therefore, we needed someone who could genuinely convey the facial and vocal qualities of a man in his late 40′s.” Sutherland will be replacing longtime series veteran David Hayter, who has been the iconic voice of Snake for over 15 years, beginning with 1998’s Metal Gear Solid. It seems likely that Hayter may still yet have a role in the game, perhaps as another clone of Big Boss, or when the original Metal Gear game is remade and Big Boss and Solid Snake come face to face for the first time. Having the same voice actor play both roles would probably be awkward; Richard Doyle played the older Big Boss in a cameo at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4.

“The game will probably still be excellent,” Hayter tweeted earlier today. “Like New Coke!”
