If you want to get the most out of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, you won’t want to pass Piggyback’s guide up.

Some gamers tend to write off strategy guides as unnecessary. Who needs these books nowadays, with walkthroughs and YouTube videos plastered all over the net? Well, the fact is that at their best, strategy guides can provide a level of immersion in your favorite games that’s hard to match. Piggyback Interactive made a fantastic guide for Metal Gear Solid 4, and now they’re taking another shot at the franchise with their Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Strategy Guide. Once again, they managed to hit it out of the park.

Konami sent out a copy of the hardcover Collector’s Edition of the guide for review, and the first thought that came to mind was how beautiful the cover is. Light reflects off of it in a really neat way, and the colors are vivid.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Strategy Guide Review 1 Raiden

I started using the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Strategy Guide on my second playthrough. A lot of players have expressed disappointment at the game’s short length, but this is a title that is meant to be played through multiple times. You won’t even unlock all of the available weapons in your first run-through. That’s where this guide comes in handy; not only does it contain the best tactics for every boss fight and enemy encounter, it also has detailed breakdowns for each style of play. Whether you’re going for a speed run or a no-kill run, you’ll find a viable plan to get you to your goals. Stealth sections are broken down with the best routes to remain undetected, and combat encounters feature tables that break down your target combo, BP, Zandatsu and time goals, if you’re going for the S-Rank.

Before it gets into all that, though, the guide introduces you to all the game’s main characters. Next, it gives you a breakdown of suggested playthroughs, followed by hammering out the fundamentals of Metal Gear Rising’s gameplay. This is key, as the game itself doesn’t do a great job with tutorials. One of the biggest complaints leveled at the title is that the Parry, a crucial tactic, is not explained well at all. Piggyback’s guide goes in-depth on parrying, parry counters, and everything else you’ll need to know to take down any enemy in your path.

In fact, there is a ton of information held within this book’s pages. Finding every achievement, claiming every collectible, and learning all of your enemies’ weak points and attack data is a breeze with this guide. Everything is detailed and well-written, with no superfluous information to sift through, and beyond that, it’s well organized and clean-looking. The Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Strategy Guide also highlights all the myriad changes that take place in a game when jumping between difficulty levels, which is appreciated. No matter what skill level you’re at, this guide can offer you something.

I only have two small gripes about this guide. All of Piggyback’s previous Metal Gear guides contained a section where they broke down the game’s story, even providing a bit of their own commentary and interpretation on it. This sadly is not the case here. While Metal Gear Rising may not have the most memorable of stories, I still would have enjoyed reading their thoughts on how it tied into the Metal Gear timeline as a whole. Secondly, the guide comes with a numbered lithograph art print of Raiden by Yoji Shinkawa. It looks awesome, but I was disappointed that it was printed with odd measurements- something that would not be easily frameable. Yes, I’m totally nit-picking here, this guide is great.

Completionists, and those left scratching their heads at the game’s shallow tutorials, will definitely want to pick up the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Strategy Guide. It contains every pertinent bit of information you’ll need to become the ultimate cyborg ninja, and includes plenty of extras like art and dev team commentary as icing on the cake. If you want to get the most out of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, you won’t want to pass this guide up.
