Man of Steel’s New Trailer Is Already Better Than Superman Returns

Man Of Steel’s first trailer has just hit the net, and it’s awesome.

Though a lot of people were apprehensive about Zack Snyder helming the reboot, he and producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises) have produced a fantastic teaser for Man of Steel. Whether the final film holds up remains to be seen, but this trailer serves its purpose- we are adequately amped to see this Superman reboot.

Going back to Superman’s origins, the Man of Steel¬†¬†trailer showcases some of the film’s talent, such as Russell Crowe as Superman’s alien father, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as the Kents who find and raise him, and of course Henry Cavill as the superhero himself. Amy Adams as Lois Lane is shown at the end of the trailer.

Clark Kent is shown as a child having to guard his secret powers, and he’s faced with the choice of saving innocent lives and revealing his true nature, or doing nothing and suffering with the knowledge that he could have saved them. His father tells him that he needs to decide what kind of man he wants to grow up to be, but no matter what, he will change the world.

The film’s tone appears to be much more grounded and grittier than previous incarnations. Some might argue that a hero such as Superman doesn’t need to be dark, however a character as powerful, as utterly indestructible as his needs some kind of a challenge. In this trailer, we see invading alien forces and what seems to be an entire city in flames. The key to adding weight to a Superman story is putting those he cares for, and the people he’s sworn to protect, in real danger. It’s already looking much more compelling than Superman Returns, where Superman’s greatest foe was a big rock.

“My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they would reject me,” says Superman at the tail end of the Man of Steel¬†trailer. “He was convinced that the world wasn’t ready. What do you think?”

What do you think of this new vision of Superman?
