Ender’s Game – Trailer Analysis

Ender’s Game – Trailer Analysis

2 By Zach Kircher

The trailer for Ender’s Game has finally arrived, and it looks promising.

Ender’s Game is one of my favorite books of all-time. I guess that isn’t saying much since I still have to brush up on my novel reading, but even so, it is truly a sci-fi masterpiece.

That is why I was personally afraid when I heard the news that Gavin Hood was chosen as the writer and director of a film adaptation. For those of you who do not know, he was the director of the truly awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I suppose that this is attributable to the writers since Hood did not contribute to the screenplay, but nonetheless, that film is in his filmography so it’s only natural for me to be worried.

However, after seeing this trailer I am convinced that Ender’s Game may just be the film I’ve been waiting for. It seems that the team behind it is making all of the right decisions: everything from the quality visual effects, intense cinematography, tone and performances appears to be rock solid, and I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. I like almost all of the actors in this cast, and even though Asa Butterfield is a little too old for the role, I am confident he will do a wonderful job as Ender after seeing his work in Hugo. Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford and Viola Davis also headline the cast, and they all seem like perfect fits to me.

I suppose my main issue would be that this trailer hints at some possible spoilers in the novel – I won’t give them away of course, but from someone who has read it I can easily point out plot points that should have been left out of the trailer. Even so, Summit has done a decent job at making a trailer that can hype up an audience of both devoted fans of the source material and common moviegoers.

I still have my reservations about this particular production, but I have faith that this great material is in the right hands. Ender’s Game will be released in theaters on November 1, 2013.
