James Gunn Confirms Thor: Love and Thunder Is Set Before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn, the infamous director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has now confirmed that Thor: Love and Thunder will take place before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in the timeline of the MCU.
Gunn had posted a message on Instagram congratulating the team behind the ultra-successful Avengers: Endgame for surpassing the monstrous $2.79 billion box office take of James Cameron’s CGI blockbuster Avatar, which released in 2009. Avengers: Endgame is now the highest-grossing film of all time.
On a thread swarmed with congratulatory comments, one of Gunn’s followers happened to ask on the post if Thor: Love and Thunder took place before or after Guardians 3, and his answer was simply, “Before”.
At Marvel’s Phase 4 reveal at Comic-Con recently, Guardians of the Galaxy was nowhere to bbe found. Gunn apologized to fans explained.
“Sorry to disappoint,” Gunn wrote on Twitter. “Guardians Vol. 3 IS happening, but I am finishing The Suicide Squad first.” The Suicide Squad reboot will begin filming later this year ahead of its August 6, 2021, release date, according to previous reports.
Given this new information, fans will likely be waiting a long time for Guardians 3. The ending of Avengers: Endgame had the heroes going their own separate ways with Thor choosing Valkyrie as his new succesor as King (Queen?) of New Asgard. Thor chooses to jump into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, dubbing their teamup the Asguardians of the Galaxy. It makes sense in a way to see how that dyamic plays out prior to GOTG 3.
