Radiant Vol. 1 Review
Tony Valente’s new shonen action manga Radiant introduces a fantasy world plagued by horrible beasts that come from the sky, terrorizing the citizens of the world and causing chaos. A small, tight-knit group of people known as “Infected”, who are shunned by society and treated less than human, are the world’s only hope against these monstrous creatures known as Nemeses.
“Wizards” are imbued with special weapons and can manipulate a magical force known as “fantasia”, but the trade-off is that upon gaining these powers one is cursed with a physical deformity or other maladies, such as wings or horns or flowers sprouting all over their body. It reminds me in a way of X-Men, in which mutants are only trying to help humanity, but are cast out for being different.
Radiant Vol. 1 introduces us to Seth, a well-meaning but brash and stupid boy who is an apprentice Wizard under the tutelage of the far more experienced witch Alma. He’s a pretty stereotypical shonen hero in the vein of Naruto. The cast of zany characters humorous dialogue and situations reminded me of Fairy Tail. and Seth’s goal is to find and destroy the mythical Nemesis nest known as Radiant.
The setup for the story and characters is very long, as the first chapter is 100 pages. The dialogue is often very funny, however, and the artwork is great, so it doesn’t feel like a grind. Radiant Vol. 1 sets up a monster-of-the-week format and what seems to be the main antagonist, but Seth only comes toe-to-toe with one Nemesis in this book. I’m excited to see what happens next though. Radiant feels like it has a lot of potential, as it already has an anime coming out in Japan, which debuts Oct. 6th and will be simulcast on Crunchyroll. Check out the trailer below!
The world is overrun with monsters called Nemesis—and a young boy infected by them will stop at nothing to defeat them all!
Evil creatures called Nemeses fall from the skies and the only ones who can fight them are Wizards—infected ones who survived a Nemesis’s corruption. Seth, one of these survivors, vows not only to fight the Nemeses, but to find their mythical nest, Radiant, and destroy it!
Seth has big goals of defeating Nemeses, but first he must earn the trust of the very villagers he wants to protect—not an easy task when those who use magic are just as feared as the Nemeses they fight. Even worse, Seth can barely control his monstrous powers! It’ll take more than brute strength—although it’ll take that too—to get Seth’s quest out of the boonies and into the big time!
