Sony Discussing Selling Spider-Man Film Rights
Could Spider-Man become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? A proposal from one of Sony’s biggest investors could make it a reality.
Many comic fans (myself included) have daydreamed about how awesome it would be to see Spider-Man in The Avengers 2. Could it ever actually happen? According to The Register, Sony is considering a proposal from investor Daniel Loeb that would involve selling off film properties such as Spider-Man and Resident Evil, as well as the rights to pop singer Adele’s musical works. Apparently Loeb owns Sony’s largest investor, which is why they are actually listening to him. Loeb wants Sony to sell off 15 to 20 percent of its entertainment properties, to focus on its electronics division.
Sony Chief Executive Kaz Hirai is considering the proposal. “Third Point’s proposal involves the way we manage a core business of the Sony group and the direction of our management,” Hirai said, “so the Sony board will give it thorough consideration before replying to Mr. Loeb.”
If this actually goes through, and Marvel is willing to pay Sony’s price for Spidey’s rights, we could well see the web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
