Wreck-It Ralph Has Gamers Thrilled
If you take pleasure in gaming and haven’t heard of the animated film Wreck-It Ralph yet, get ready to be excited. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film has already received a multitude of attention with the debut of the official trailer. Gamers everywhere are hyped about it.
John C. Reilly stars as Wreck-It Ralph, a video game character withheld in an arcade game, repeating the same “job” day after day. The “job” of a video game character becomes tedious for Ralph, and he yearns to explore other gaming worlds. He “jumps” from game to game, accidentally releasing a digital video game baddie. He must team up with an unlikely partner to bring the villain to justice. He meets such characters as Zangief, M.Bison, Chun Lee, and Cammy from Street Fighter; Pac Man Ghost; Bowser from Super Mario Bros.; Dr. Robotnik from Sonic The Hedgehog; Q*Bert; Paperboy; Kano from Mortal Kombat; Neff from Altered Beast and many others.
There are obvious allusions to other games such as Halo, Gears of War, Candyland and House of the Dead. The entire movie is a horde of gaming innuendos. For example, the game Fix-It Felix Jr. seemingly resembles the old Donkey Kong. Fix-It Felix Jr. can actually be played online on the Disney website. The object of the game is to use Felix and repair windows while moving up the building. You must avoid the brute, Ralph, as he throws bricks while also avoiding flying ducks. Gain pies left in windows and earn a high score.
Toy Story may have captured the era of children’s games and toys, but Wreck-It Ralph delivers a nostalgic and familiar presence to those video games of a bygone era. Besides the release of several anticipated video games this fall, Wreck-It Ralph is sure to fall right into a niche of video gamers’ must-see lists.
Wreck-It Ralph is set to be released Nov. 2 this year.
