IK Multimedia iKlip Xpand Review
IK Multimedia continues to broaden its mobile product lineup with iKlip Xpand ($49.99), which improves upon the functionality of its predecessor the iKlip – the company’s highest-selling product. iKlip Xpand utilizes four expandable grips that can securely hold full-size tablets to a microphone stand, so musicians can focus on their performance without worrying about the safety of their expensive mobile device.
iKlip Xpand’s spring-loaded bracket can hold devices ranging from 7 inches to 12.1 inches, and it works flawlessly. After a slight bit of assembly out of the box, iKlip Xpand easily mounts onto any mic stand with a diameter of up to 1.2 inches – I even got it to mount on bookshelves and my desk. Once it’s screwed in place it’s not going anywhere, and the ball joint can be turned to just about any angle for optimal viewing in landscape or portrait mode. iKlip Xpand uses a rubberized “Gorilla Grip” to fasten the tablet in place without scratching the exterior of the device. Crucially, the jaws of the iKlip Xpand do not cover any of the ports on the device, allowing users to connect audio equipment such as IK Multimedia’s iRig PRO, iRig KEYS PRO, iRig Voice, and more. IK Multimedia will soon be releasing a companion app called iKlip Stage, which allows users to import tabs, lyrics, music scores and more.
If you’re currently using an iPhone or similarly-sized device to create music, IK Multimedia has also released the iKlip Xpand Mini ($39.99), which can hold any smartphone with a screen size of 3.5 inches to 6 inches.
In short, IK Multimedia’s iKlip Xpand and iKlip Xpand Mini are indispensable accessories for music performance and creation on mobile platforms. iKlip Xpand securely mounts tablets of most sizes (even with a case on), and its wide range of flexibility allows optimal viewing at virtually any angle.
