Breaking Bad Spanish Version – Metastasis Trailer
If you haven’t heard, yesterday a Columbian version of AMC’s hit show Breaking Bad was announced, called Metastasis. The lead characters’ names have been changed – from Walter White to Walter Blanco, from Jess Pinkman to Jose Miguel Rosas, from Skylar to Cielo, etc., but aside from that and the language change, it appears to be essentially the same show. A promotional image was even released of Walter Blanco (played by Diego Trujillo) in the iconic white underwear-clad, pistol-wielding pose from the first season of Breaking Bad. Now a new trailer has hit the web for the show, where you can witness several familiar scenes being re-enacted.
“Breaking Bad is a fantastic series that wasn’t widely seen in Latin America, partly because cable doesn’t yet have full penetration in the region,” said Angelica Guerra, SPT senior vp and managing director of production for Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market. “[But] there is a universality to the story and its characters that we recognized could work very well.”
Apparently the original version of Breaking Bad was sold by Sony into more than 170 territories, but it never quite caught on due to the extreme violence and drug themes. In fact, it was canceled in the UK after its second season, but later revived by Netflix. In the past, Sony has done similar local reimaginings with shows like Married… With Children and Everybody Loves Raymond.
One aspect that will be changed about the show is that Walter and “Jose” will no longer be cooking in an RV, as they are not popular in Latin America. “Motor homes are not popular in Colombia,” Guerra says, “so audiences will see Walter and Jose cooking up their first several batches of methamphetamine in an old, barely drivable school bus.”
