Is David Hayter’s Metal Gear Solid V Absence A Prank?

Is David Hayter’s Metal Gear Solid V Absence A Prank?

Is this all an elaborate April Fools prank? Or will David Hayter truly not be reprising his role as Snake in Metal Gear Solid V?

Recently, David Hayter announced the unthinkable- after 15+ years of voicing one of gaming’s most iconic heroes, he would be replaced as the voice of Snake for Metal Gear Solid V. Ever since the announcement, I’ve personally felt that this may all be another elaborate ruse by Hideo Kojima – he’s very well known for his pranks and red herrings, as proven by the recent The Phantom Pain/ Moby Dick Studios fiasco. I’ve been pondering for some time as to whether Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (now revealed to be a part of Metal Gear Solid V) would lead into a Metal Gear remake- with both Solid Snake and Big Boss taking center stage.

Kojima Confirms That The Phantom Pain Is A Metal Gear Game

Now, he’s written an official statement about why he was not asked to come back, and how it was not his decision. Remember guys: it’s April 1st. Why would he choose today of all days to make such a statement? Here’s our theory: in the Metal Gear Solid V trailer released last week, you hear a woman say near the end, “V has come to.” How many clones of Big Boss have there been? If you count Big Boss/ Naked Snake as I, that would make Liquid and Solid Snake II and III. Solidus would be IV, leaving V to possibly be another Snake clone we don’t yet know about. Perhaps a new actor will be voicing Big Boss since he’s getting older, and David Hayter will be either reprising his role as a young Solid Snake or whoever V may be. What do you think?

Hayter explained via Twitter, “I have been up in Toronto, for the past eight months, directing my first film,” Hayter explained. “On the December break, I came home to Los Angeles for the holidays. I heard then, that recording sessions for MG:V were being put together. But I didn’t hear anything about whether I’d be needed or not. So, I got in touch with someone involved in the production. We got together for lunch, and he told me that they ‘wouldn’t be needing me’ on this game. No reason, or explanation was given beyond that. And that was it.”

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Could Lead Into A Metal Gear Remake

“It’s been fifteen years, nine games, and an enormous blast to undertake,” Hayter wrote. “If it were my choice, I would do this role forever. To hear anyone else’s voice coming from Snake’s battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest. But the truth is — it’s not my choice. Any and all casting decisions are the sole purview of Hideo Kojima, and Konami itself. And that’s fair. And I’ll get by. I am not lacking for employment on any level. But I didn’t want anybody to think that I was intentionally abandoning them. And know that I will miss this job, and this character, very much.”

Is The Phantom Pain Really Metal Gear Solid 5?

One would hope that if this truly was the end for David Hayter’s Snake, Konami and Kojima would at least throw a party in his honor or something. Fifteen years and nine games is quite a pedigree to throw away with no explanation. You can read the full text of David’s statement here.

I don’t believe it either. I have a SLIGHT feeling Kojima is pulling one over our heads, at least I hope so because it would be a shame if Kojima and Konami didn’t contact David Hayter and at least let him know instead of just shutting the guy out after 15 years lol… but I guess we’ll see soon enough how they do business over there…. April 1st and no send-off at all make me believe he (and solid snake) will be in the game though.. we’ll see :/

  2. I’d like to point out that Hayter, very deliberately, never refers to Metal Gear SOLID V – he mentions MG:V. As far as we know, no game with such a moniker exists. These guys don’t do anything by mistake, it’s all calculated.
I believe both Solid Snake and Big Boss will be appearing in this game together. Big Boss alone in the ‘Ground Zeroes’ portion of MGSV which takes place 9 years before the ‘Phantom Pain’ portion. By that point Solid Snake will be very much alive and a (very) young adult who will appear older due to the rapid aging.
I believe Kojima felt it would be weird to have Hayter voice both Big Boss and Solid Snake talking to each other, so he cast two different voice actors – just like he did with the end of MGS4.
V might even encompass the entirety of the Outer Haven uprising and Big Boss’ defeat at the hands of Solid Snake as seen in Metal Gear 1, be the whole ‘remake’ people are looking for (after all, a straight up sole remake of MG1 now would be pretty lackluster standing alone).
I think Kojima and Hayter are trying to keep Hayters involvement a secret as long as possible to really startle fans of the series when they finally play the game and find out the truth.
One more note – the whole ‘V’ thing is very suspicious. It was MGS 2, 3 and 4, why the switch now to roman numeral? It may be a reference to something other than 5, or have deeper meaning than 5. Possibly a new Snake as you mentioned but I’m not too sure of that.
This stuff is great, I love Kojima for having so much fun with the fans with this stuff.

  3. Fun fact: David Hayter gave up half his paycheck merely to get the original voice
cast for Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes.
He was that dedicated to bringing the fans the authentic metal gear
experience. He is too nice to ask us, but how could we possibly turn our back
on him in his time of need? I will fight for David Hayter any day.

    • Yeah I heard about that a while ago. Honestly I still believe this is all just one of Kojima’s crazy hoaxes. He swore up and down that The Phantom Pain was not MGS5.

  4. Oh I see Kojima, lets reinvent the series . . . but instead of reinventing,
actually lets just fire one guy. NO HAYTER, NO BUY.

  5. So….

is the JP voice actor who played Naked Snake returning and David Hayter is
not. The only conclusion I can draw from this is a great man in being
    unjustly fired. Logic Fail

OK, so I am wondering why then Konami just hired back Quintin Flynn (EN voice of Riaden) and not bring back David Hayter? It just doesn’t make any sense. I guess then I can’t support Metal gear anymore
