Star Wars: Spin-off Movies Confirmed
It seems we’ll be getting even more Star Wars than we originally thought.
The Star Wars news that has been tossed about these past few months has been nothing short of exciting. From Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and the rights to the franchise, to the announcement of a brand new Star Wars trilogy, and then the recent mind-blowing news that J.J. Abrams will be the director of Star Wars: Episode VII, the future is looking bright for the epic sci-fi franchise.
And now we have even more reason to get excited.
Last month, rumors were floating around that released alongside the new trilogy would be separate spin-off films that would not necessarily fit into the story arches of the already existing saga, but still work within the official canon. One such rumor was that Man of Steel director Zack Snyder was attached to a Star Wars project based on Seven Samurai, even though this rumor was trodden down by his agents. Other recent rumors have hinted at possible projects focusing on a young Han Solo, Boba Fett, and even the great Jedi Master Yoda. In light of such claims, Disney CEO Bob Iger has recently confirmed that there will indeed be standalone Star Wars films produced within the same timeframe as Star Wars: Episode VII, VIII and IX.
In an interview with CNBC, Iger stated “We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films. [Lawrence] Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too.” Let’s hope that the force is strong with Disney on this one.
Star Wars: Episode VII is currently targeted for release in 2015.
