Weed through this year’s biggest releases and find the perfect gift for the gaming enthusiast with our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide.
Sometimes gamers can be hard to buy for. With that in mind, we’ve compiled our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide to help you nail the perfect gifts for the gamers in your life. Here’s a list featuring consoles, games, accessories, and more.
Nintendo finally makes the leap into high definition (about six years later than the competition) with the all-new Wii U. This high-powered console boasts not only HD versions of classic franchises such as Mario (and surely a new Zelda title is already being prepped), but also solid third-party titles such as Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition, Assassin’s Creed 3 and Mass Effect 3. The price point won’t give you sticker shock, but they are definitely in demand and hard to find this season.
The PlayStation Vita may have gotten off to a bit of a rocky start, but it’s starting to finally pick up some steam. It’s undoubtedly the most high-tech handheld offering the world has seen, with powerful processing power, a huge screen, and front and rear touchpads. Sony recently made a very smart move by offering many of the Vita‘s hottest titles for free for PlayStation Plus members. (Side note: This service is a great value, for those interested in digital games and betas.) With solid titles like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale, and the recent Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, the handheld has enough games to keep gamers busy until next year’s lineup shows. It’ll play your original PSP’s digital library, as well as PSone games and PlayStation Minis. It even has Netflix and lots of other cool apps, as well as Trophy support.
If you buy the Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation PS Vita Wi-fi bundle, you get the game, the system, and a 4GB memory card for the price of just the standard system.
$60, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 3 is undoubtedly the franchise’s best outing since the critically-acclaimed Assassin’s Creed 2. The new game features half Indian, half British Assassin Connor as he fights for freedom in the Revolutionary War. You can build your own town, engage in naval battles, fight bears in the wilderness, and battle alongside George Washington. What more can you ask for? We gave the game a 9.1/ 10 in our review.
Borderlands 2 brings players back to Pandora and throws them back into the chaotic, addictive FPS mayhem. Expanding upon everything that made the first game awesome, such as zany, entertaining characters and a huge arsenal of customizable weaponry, earned this game a 5/5 in our review.
Considering that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 earned over 1 billion dollars within 15 days of release, it shouldn’t be surprising to see this game on a holiday gift guide. Fans were unsure if the latest entry would be able to keep up the previous titles’ momentum, but it far exceeded our expectations. With a standout campaign, extremely addictive and fun online multiplayer, Zombies mode, and free Call of Duty Elite access for all owners of the game, Black Ops 2 earned a 9.2/10 in our review.
THQ’s latest wrestling game, WWE 13, expands upon the great foundation built by its predecessors while adding a ton of great new features. With the largest roster ever (80+ characters, before DLC), expanded customization modes, and the awesome Attitude Era mode featuring some of history’s greats like Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, there’s plenty to love about this newest iteration in the franchise. WWE 13 earned a 9.0/10 in our review.
Skullcandy SLYR Gaming Headset
$80, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
This awesome $80 gaming headset from Skullcandy features compatibility with PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. With stellar sound and voice clarity, three EQ settings, and solid construction, the Skullcandy SLYR headset is the perfect gift for gamers that love to take out their frustrations on the hapless online community (or maybe just play some co-op). This headset earned a 9.0/ 10 in our review.
Nvidia’s latest offering in the mid-range system builder market, the GeForce GTX 660 Ti, is an excellent value for the performance this unit gets. In our tests this card had no trouble running all the latest and most graphics-intensive PC games on maximum (or close to maximum) settings without breaking much of a sweat- and its PhysX, Tessellation and TXAA features really bring the visuals to life. Packing power beyond its $300 price point, this card will surely cause AMD to reevaluate its product line. If you’re gifting for a PC enthusiast who needs to upgrade their rig, this is the perfect gift. You can read our GTX 660 Ti review here.
The Amazing Spider-Man Blu Ray Collector’s Edition
The comics-loving crowd seems to be a bit divided over this one, but we here at Metal Arcade loved Spidey’s latest outing, The Amazing Spider-Man, giving it a 4.5/ 5 in our review. Spider-Man fans will totally love this Collector’s Edition of the Blu Ray, featuring two awesome figures of Spidey and The Lizard, as well as the 3D Blu Ray, two special features discs and the DVD. Side note: the videogame adaptation for consoles and PC, as well as the iOS version, are well worth checking out.
