Obsidian Announces South Park RPG, Due 2012December 2, 2011
The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, are working with THQ and Obsidian Games to develop a South Park RPG, called South Park: The Stick of Truth.
The very thought of this calls to mind racial slurs and South Park’s ridiculous characters. There’s Kenny, Kyle, Stan, Butters, and last but not least, Cartman. It has been around since the late nineties, and hasn’t failed to make a large impact in popular culture. So much so, in fact that Cartman was elected TV Guide’s tenth greatest cartoon character. Some great moments have come out of South Park in it’s 14 and a half seasons, I’m cereal.
And over those 14 and a half seasons, South Park’s creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have showed a clear interest in gaming.
Now that they have taken their creative talents to TV, movie theaters and Broadway, they decided it was time to make a new game.
Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ, said, “Our goal is simple: to put creative talent first, Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation. Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true.” The game is described as “an epic role-playing adventure that will allow the user to befriend Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny and explore the quiet little mountain town like never before”.”
According to Game Informer, the game puts the player in the shoes of a new kid in town, who needs to meet people, make new friends, and defend the town from threats. It seems like there would be exploration involved and it would be very interesting to play a Fallout-esque South Park game. Obsidian previously worked on Fallout: New Vegas. Interacting with characters from the show such as Cartman, Kyle, Butters, even Chef and doing quests for them (perhaps acquiring them as companions?) would certainly be more interesting that past South Park games.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is set to release in the later half of 2012, so watch out, Mass Effect 3, there’s a new kid on the block.
