Manny Pacquiao’s Pound For Pound- App ReviewNovember 22, 2011
You might know Manny Pacquiao as a popular Filipino boxer. He’s decided to take part in an action-fighting app for iOS (soon to be released for Android) called Manny Pacquiao’s Pound For Pound (available now). In this game, Manny is portrayed as an action hero a la Bruce Lee, and you’ll fight through the Filipino underground in search of your kidnapped friend. Sure, it’s a bit of a far-out premise (you’d expect a game of this nature more from someone like Jet Li), but it works. Pound For Pound is definitely a fun game.
When I first saw screenshots of the game, I thought it would be something similar to Tekken’s Force Mode, where you’re running around cities beating up thugs in a sort of 3D Streets of Rage. Once I got my hands on it, however, I realized that it actually has a lot more in common with last year’s Infinity Blade. You’re fighting against foes one after the other in one-on-one hand to hand combat, with some story cutscenes interspersed between them. The story is pretty thin, but a game like this is all about gameplay, and luckily it’s pretty well-done.
You’ll swipe the screen in different motions to attack your opponent with your fists and kicks. Different combinations unlock new moves, such as an epic Street Fighter-style Dragon Punch. The controls take a bit of getting used to, and they could be a bit more responsive, but they’ve definitely serviceable. Similar to Infinity Blade (and reminiscent of the old school NES game Punch Out!), you’ll hold down a button in the bottom-center of the screen to block, and tap buttons on the left and right to dodge in those directions. When you block and throw punches you’ll use up stamina, and if your opponent beats into you too much and you run out, you’ll be dazed, which almost always means the end of the fight. It turns out that you can’t just button-mash (screen-mash?) your way to victory; you’ll have to be a bit more strategic in your battle plan to win.
When you gain victory over your opponents, you’ll accrue points, which you can use on buying Manny new gear. You can unlock new clothes, footwear, and gloves. Gloves can give you more attack power, footwear improves stamina, and clothes gift you with more vitality (and style!). There’s plenty to unlock, which should keep you playing for awhile. Combine that with Game Center support, leaderboards and achievements, and you’ve got a good amount of game for your money. If you’re a fan of Manny’s, boxing, or Infinity Blade, you’ll want to check this app out.
