WWE SummerSlam 2011 Review (With a Whole Lot of Pictures!)
WWE’s SummerSlam Pay-Per-View was packed with awesome surprises this year. This will be loaded with spoilers, so if you want to see it for yourself, don’t read any further.
What everybody’s talking about:
CM Punk and John Cena had a great battle, but ended with CM Punk pinning Cena for the win. However, Cena’s leg was on the ropes, but Triple H counted it anyway. After Punk celebrated for a moment, a man came out of the crowd and powerbombed CM Punk. It was revealed to be Kevin Nash! Then, Alberto Del Rio’s music played as he rushed down the ramp to cash in his Money In The Bank suitcase against Punk, who he dropkicked and pinned for the win. Alberto Del Rio is the new WWE Champion!
This show was live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Adam Jones, the guitarist of Tool, opened the show by playing the National Anthem on guitar.
Then there was a video package for the big match of the night, CM Punk Vs. John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Champion title. Afterwards, The Miz came out and stated that he was there by popular demand, and thanked everyone for insisting that he be a part of SummerSlam. Then R-Truth interrupted him, who was then interrupted by Alberto Del Rio. It was an unannouned 6 man tag team match, and it was rounded out by the team of Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston and John Morrison.
6-Man Tag Match: Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston and John Morrison defeat Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth and The Miz by pinfall.
After the match, CM Punk was shown backstage with John Laurenitis, who demanded that Punk issue him an apology for the humiliating kick he suffered by Punk on RAW. Punk gave him an extremely sarcastic apology, and then Stephanie McMahon showed up (good to see her back!). She said she was there to wish him luck, and that even her father and Triple H wish him luck. She reached out her hand to shake his, but he responded by saying that, well, he would, but he knows where that hand has been (haha!).
Mark Henry defeats Sheamus by count out.
Yes, a count-out. The lamest of all match endings. I was truly hoping that Sheamus would finally take Mark Henry down here. It was a decent match, and then Henry threw Sheamus through a barricade and he couldn’t get back to the ring in time.
Then, Cee-Lo Green did a live performance, and was joined by the Bellas, Eve Torres and Alicia Fox.
Diva’s Championship Match: Kelly Kelly (W/Eve Torres) defeats Beth Phoenix (w/Natalya) bypinfall.
I was excited by this outcome; I thought they would try and drag out Beth and Natalya being unbeatable for a while. Their team up is obviously trying to make up for Kharma’s abscense due to her pregnancy, but it just kind of sucks. Kelly Kelly and Eve are much cooler (not to mention hotter) so I’m glad Kelly kept the belt.
Stephanie McMahon is seen exiting John Cena’s locker room.
Wade Barrett defeats Danial Bryan by pinfall.
Randy Orton defeats Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship
Christian had been hyping up the fact that he had an ace up his sleeve for this No Holds Barred match up. It turns out it was none other than his BFF Edge, the Rated R Superstar. I knew immediately that there would be some twist to this, since Edge has stated that he can never be cleared to compete in the WWE ever again. That twist was Edge coming out and essentially telling Christian that while he will always be his best friend, he has been a whiny little bitch as of late, that he was ashamed of how he won the MITB match by disqualification, and he needs to earn his respect.
Stephanie and Triple H are shown backstage talking about something important.
WWE Undisputed Title Match (W/Triple H as referee): CM Punk defeated John Cena by pinfall
A good match that went back and forth quite a bit, and had the crowd going wild. AT one point it looked like Punk would tap from Cena’s STF, but he managed to make it to the ropes. Then Punk threw Cena out of the ring and did a fiying dive at him, and looked like he really injured his neck/face when he accidentally hit the barricade in doing so. Hunter started making his way up to the 10 count, and I was getting ready for yet another disappointment when Triple H stopped the count, got out of the ring, and threw both of their asses back in the ring. That was pretty cool. After a lot of reversals, finishers and kick-outs, Punk did the GTS on Cena and pinned him. Triple H counted the three count, and didn’t care/notice that Cena’s leg was on the ropes.
Cm Punk celebrated for a moment, but then Kevin Nash came to the ring and powerbombed the living hell out of him, which prompted Alberto Del Rio to run to the ring and cash in his MITB briefcase. He pinned Punk for the win and was crowned the new WWE Champion.
Overall, it was a fantastic follow up to Money In The Bank.
