CM Punk Shoot Promo On WWE RAWJune 28, 2011
If you didn’t see RAW tonight, you missed out on one of the most scorching promos ever shown in the WWE. CM Punk closed out RAW with one of his typical sit down talks, but this one was far more personal than any we’ve seen before. The sound crew actually cut his mic off by the end of it.
First, he walked out in a Stone Cold Steve Austin shirt, so you could tell something was odd from the start.
He publicly trashed WWE as a whole, starting with John Cena. He called Cena out for being as popular as he is only because he kisses Vince McMahon’s ass so much. He told Cena that he’s a pretty great ass kisser, even as good as Hulk Hogan was, but not as great as “Dwayne”, which was clearly aimed at The Rock. He also stated multiple times that he was the best “wrestler” in the world, eschewing the “Superstar” title that all WWE wrestlers are required to adhere to.
He goes on to talk about how he’s not at the top of the WWE because he doesn’t sell as much merch as bigger Superstars like Cena and The Rock. He went on to state how it makes him “sick” that The Rock is headlining Wrestlemania 28 and not him.
Punk crossed the final line when he said that the company was being destroyed by Vince McMahon, and that perhaps it would be better once he is dead. He then retracted that statement, however, saying that even once he was dead it would just be run by his “idiotic daughter and stupid family”. He then said something about the WWE’s bullying campaign, and then said, “Let me tell you a personal story about Vince McMahon,” alluding to the irony of the Be A Star campaign when Vince himself is known for being a bully.
At that point, Punk’s mic was cut off.
So what’s our take? If this was something entirely written up by WWE’s creative staff and acted out by Punk, then Punk is the greatest actor we’ve ever seen. The blistering words seemed straight from CM Punk’s heart, and you could see the fire burning in his eyes. You could feel his extreme cynicism for the industry, and since he had to come out and do a promo anyway, he took the opportunity to lay into his detractors and get some time in the spotlight. And why not? His contract was almost up, and he had nothing to lose.
Some choice tweets from WWE alumni around the world:
Stone Cold: @CMPunk just melted my 52 inch TV with a scorching hot promo…delivery, content, and attitude…one of the best promos I’ve ever seen.
Mick Foley: I have no idea where this @cmpunk thing might go, but I know I’ll be watching. Captivating stuff.
Jim Ross: Most compelling, controversial end of Raw in a long time. @cmpunk edgy, attitudinal & full of rage. Don’t know what to think. Wow.
